Wayne will say better, but I think the modifier was first and then they introduced the extrapolation mode later in Blender version. I think the extrapolation mode is just a quick way to get the effect but the modifier allows for more control and settings. But Wayne will have a better answer tomorrow so we get our answer yesterday today.
