Unfortunately the blender devs changed the way the clip feature works in 2.78. A bummed me tweeted about it when I realized the change.
Whenever I do a lot of retopology, I simply open my .blend file with 2.77 and retopo with the former functionality. Then when it’s done, I’ll hop back over to the newest version.
