I may be wrong but my understanding of the current development with bones is that the layer system will eventually be dropped and blender will have ‘Bone Collections’. At least this was the plan from when Blender 2.80 was released.
I am of the understanding that it is still the eventual goal, however, this development keeps getting pushed back.
So I think there will be a built in management system after these changes have been implemented, but it still isn’t anytime soon.
In the meantime, yes, you should buy Fin a coffee! He is a Blender Champ!
