    Hi Luis,

    It is because you are using a mirror modifier to mirror the vert groups but the vert group it is trying to mirror into does not exist.

    eg – if the “Leg.R” vert group does not exist it will mirror “Leg.L” across to that side.

    But if it does exist, it knows to mirror the weights in the .R group.

    When you auto weight paint, Blender will create all the vert groups according to the bone names that are set to deform.

    Hope that helps – here’s a screen shot of the left shin weight group.  See how it is mirrored over to the other side because the .R group doesn’t exist.
