@spikeyxxx hdri will help on the ambience. it will crack through and bring up the overral levels. which helps in compositing to dial it back down. also you can add lights inside and not open up the sides, for all in purposes, there could be lantern behind the camera that lights the insides aswell. if you look the references Kent put they have lot of ambient light and shadows.
