Yes the bones need to be placed in the correct spots.
Often this is in the middle of the volume – which isn’t anatomically correct but it will give you a better result and more flexibility.
The really important placement is where the joints will pivot. You want this to be in a logical spot. For example, the knee joint on one of the earlier submissions was part way down the shin. This will create really odd looking deformation.
When a limb has more than one deformation bone (eg – Shin_01 and _02). These should be aligned or you will have warping in its rest position.
You don’t want the Shin to bend in it’s default state – this means it will be even more warped that starting model is.
