If you are using the provided files and you can’t select the individual controls, then it sounds like you are not in Pose mode.
I change modes in the course with “Tab”, but as explained in earlier this is not the default keymap. Try pressing “CTRL TAB” and choosing Pose mode with the armature selected.
But without some more information on your issue I can’t know exactly how to help.
