I have found a hack, that seems to work. Follow these exact steps in this order (don’t know if it makes a difference, but be on the safer side). Starting from the file you provided:
Switch to Object Mode.
Select the pot.
Remove the Vertex Group and add a new Vertex Group (press minus and then plus). No need to re-name it or anything.
Select the head 2 and do the same; remove the Vertex Group and add a new one.
Select the pot and SHIFT Select the head 2.
Join the Objects with CTRL+J.
Now you can switch to Texture Paint Mode and start painting…if you are lucky…
Sometimes this doesn’t work and you lose some Faces when you Join the two….In that case: Close Blender and open it again and repeat the above steps. It seems to work most of the times, I tried it. No re-modeling needed.
