I assume that this would be ok so long as you Keep the values of each color correct but Could you just start a new file open in your choice of Photo editor and paint the more tedious stuff like the lines for instance in it and then load it back in? or would that cause issues with it?

Nope, you absolutely can do that. I’ve taken that approach many times.
