One other useful technique is to add your objects into groups in your source file. Then link the group into your destination file. This way you can move it around like it was local, but changes in the source file to the mesh will still flow to the destination file. Sort of the best of both worlds. Very useful for teams working on asset files and linking them all into scene files.

Amazing tip, thanks. I work on a kitchen scene and splitted it up into several animation files when i recognized that i had to change alot in the kitchen.
