So… Several times I got myself into a situation where the mesh must have folded on itself and I could find no easy way to get it to flatten out in an orderly fashion. I had to resort to going into edit mode, selecting vertices that were inside the volume, grow the selection, merge or delete them and then sculpt that section again.

Is there a more straightforward way to recover from this sort of problem?

When that happens to me I usually switch to “subdivide collapse”, increase the detail size and stroke over the bad geo till it regenerates properly.
