My custom bone properties are not showing in the properties panel. How do I make them appear; they show up automatically for you.

Are you certain the context is right? The custom bone settings should appear on an armature object – Make sure you selecting the armature instead of the custom bone object

The embarrassing answer is I had selected the bone, but was attempting to add a custom property in the Object Tab instead of Bone tab. Custom properties created in the object tab do not appear in pose mode. Thank you though, Kent, your stuff here is great.
