I will make a Vertex Group of the entire fuselage and go back and remove just the faces of the wing that I want to extrude. Problem is when I hit select there are more faces removed then what I selected. The wing and the surrounding faces have been unselected from the group. At first I thought that I may have missed a step along the tutorial. But I can easily replicate this same problem just by opening a mesh object and removing a face. Surrounding faces are removed as well. How do I fix this / is this a setting?

yup you probably deleted vertex, any other faces or edges in relationship to these vertices will be deleted as they won’t exist anymore (a face is at least 3 vertices, if you take away one of them, the face disappears)
