When I go into vertex paint mode, my image goes all white, and I don’t see the detail that is in the tutorial model, nor the paint texture that is applied. I am in vertex paint mode with view port shading set to solid. I am using v2.70. What step did I miss?

I did end up installing an upgraded version and it did, and I at least can see the detail, and I can see the paint as long as my subsurface modifier is not applied. Once applied I cannot see the texture.

Right, because vertex colors are dependent on the base model. You’ll have to apply your subsurf modifier and then paint your vertex colors.
