Kent Trammell can you please take a look at this problem?  I have experienced the same issue as peaky01 and fuchs, which makes me think that others may also be hit with it.  My solution was to re-create the bottom part of the chest (where the bevels work as expected) and replace the bottom that was not handling bevels correctly.  But, I’d still like to understand what happened.  Here is a screen capture of the problem:

In Edit mode, the bevel looks like it was correctly applied on both the inside and outside.  But, in Object mode the planks are beveled correctly on the inside of the chest, but not on the outside.  As you can see, I took one plank, selected with the L-Hotkey and raised it in the Z.  It “seems” that the Split done earlier in the workflow is working.  I am using Blender 2.80.74 (7/9/2019) and have tried earlier versions as well as 2.81.  All exhibit the same problem.

Below is a link to a blender file that isolates the problem.  Just press A & Ctrl-B and Tab out of Edit mode and into Object mode to see the problem.

Also note that if you increase the bevel width greater than 0.1 then you can start to see a separation in the outside of the planks in Object mode.

    Thanks!
