You need to enable the Node Wrangler Addon in user preferences (included with official Blender). With that enabled, SHFT + CTRL + CLICK automatically plugs any node into the material output node, where shader nodes go in green to green and non-shader nodes go node -> viewer node -> shader output to display pure color/value data.
