Instead of knife project, use the knife tool.

Just a little tip, when creating the 45 degree angles, press ‘K’ to use the knife tool, cut from the outer vertex and hold ‘C’ to constrain the angle to 45 degree increments. It’s a lot simpler than creating a plane to use knife project.
