Hi Ken,
Yes making a Loop Cut with CTRL+R always put you into Edge Select Mode. That is, unless you make a Loop Cut on an Edge, instead of through one (or more) Face(s), meaning cutting an Edge that is not connected to any Faces. then it stays in whatever Mode you’re in.
About that last part, it’s understandable, but it will probably happen again..more than once, sorry.
